Austria’s digital motorway vignette has two start clocks at checkout

Buying Austria’s digital motorway vignette is not the same as starting it. For a private traveller using the official ASFINAG toll shop or app, the start clock depends on the product selected.

A one-day or 10-day digital vignette can begin immediately. A two-month or annual digital vignette bought online by a consumer is valid from the 18th day after purchase at the earliest. The payment can be complete while the licence plate is still outside the valid period.

That split is easy to miss because all four products appear in the same digital system. It is also unusually practical: choosing a longer pass at the last minute can create a waiting period that the shorter options do not have.

ASFINAG explains the 18-day rule through consumer withdrawal rights. A consumer has 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase, followed by three extra days allowed for a cancellation sent by post to arrive. The operator therefore starts an online consumer’s two-month or annual vignette no earlier than day 18.

The same delay does not apply to the one-day or 10-day vignette. ASFINAG’s shop also says it does not apply when a digital toll product is bought as part of company activity, because the company route has no online withdrawal right. That distinction is a legal purchasing status, not a shortcut for a private holiday. A traveller should use the category that truthfully matches the transaction.

The sales channel can change the clock too. ASFINAG says a digital vignette bought from an on-site distributor, toll booth or vending machine can be valid immediately. Its authorised online sales partners also advertise immediate use. The useful check is therefore not simply “digital or sticker”. It is product length, purchaser status, seller and chosen start date.

The product names have their own timing detail. A one-day vignette covers one calendar day, from midnight to midnight, rather than a rolling 24 hours after purchase. A 10-day vignette includes the selected first day, so a start on 10 January runs through 19 January at midnight. A two-month vignette beginning on 10 January runs through 10 March at midnight.

For 2026, ASFINAG lists car prices of €9.60 for one day, €12.80 for 10 days, €32 for two months and €106.80 for the annual vignette. The one-day product is digital only. The 10-day, two-month and annual products are available digitally or, during 2026, as adhesive windscreen stickers.

The 2026 sticker is the last of that format under ASFINAG’s current plan. The operator says Austria will offer only the digital vignette from 2027. That future change does not make every 2026 purchase digital, and it does not remove the current difference between an online consumer purchase and an immediately active authorised channel.

A digital vignette is linked to the vehicle’s licence plate rather than its windscreen. The purchase process asks for the country of registration, plate number, email address and intended start date. A typo can therefore attach the product to the wrong record even when the payment succeeds.

ASFINAG provides a public validity query by country and plate. There is an important limit: its shop FAQ says the public query shows only digital toll products that are already valid. A product bought for a future date, including one still inside the consumer waiting period, may not appear there. The order confirmation is the place to check the selected validity period before it begins.

This makes the sequence less mysterious. Check the confirmation first, including plate, country and start date. Use the validity query when the product should already be active. A receipt alone does not answer both questions.

The vignette generally applies to Austrian motorways and expressways for cars, motorcycles and camper vans up to 3.5 tonnes technically permissible maximum laden mass. ASFINAG lists several exempt motorway stretches, so route detail still matters.

Six high-cost motorway sections use a separate section-toll system, including the Brenner, Arlberg, Tauern and Karawanken routes and the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels. ASFINAG says no vignette is required on the tolled section between the relevant toll stations, but connecting roads can return a vehicle to the vignette network. Its route planner is designed to identify the digital products required for a selected Austrian journey.

This boundary matters for two opposite errors. A driver can buy a vignette and still need a section-toll ticket on a particular route. Another can assume a whole journey is vignette-free because one tunnel section uses its own toll. The official route, not the country name alone, settles the product mix.

Austria’s vignette system is becoming more digital, but the key question at checkout is still temporal. A short online pass can start now. A longer consumer pass bought directly online needs lead time, unless it comes through an authorised immediate-use channel. The calmest planning check is not “Have I paid?” It is “Is this plate valid for this road on this date?”
