Jetstar’s 2027 economy carry-on reset puts the wheelie behind Priority

A seven-kilogram cabin allowance sounds like a weight problem. Jetstar Airways is turning it into a space choice.

For JQ flights departing from 2 February 2027, every booking will include one bag that fits under the seat. A second bag for the overhead locker will come through Priority Carry-on or an eligible Economy bundle. The familiar wheelie case is not disappearing, but whether it is included will depend on the option attached to the booking.

The change is confirmed, but it is not in force yet. Flights before 2 February 2027 keep the current allowance. Jetstar Japan flights, identified by the GK airline code, also remain on the existing system. Date and operating carrier matter as much as the bag itself.

Under the future JQ policy, the baseline allowance is one underseat bag measuring no more than 40 by 30 by 20 centimetres. Jetstar gives a handbag, laptop bag or small backpack as examples.

Priority Carry-on adds an overhead bag measuring up to 56 by 36 by 23 centimetres. It also gives the customer an earlier place in Jetstar’s planned boarding order, after Business Class and before travellers carrying only an underseat bag. The airline says it will aim to follow that order, but operational requirements can change it.

Priority is not an unlimited entitlement. Jetstar says the option is limited and available until sold out. If a traveller has an underseat-only allowance and arrives with two items, an upgrade at the gate depends on Priority still being available. Otherwise, an item may need to be checked and extra fees may apply. The official page does not support one universal fee figure, so the live booking and fees pages remain the relevant places for a particular flight.

Business Class has a different inclusion. Jetstar’s baggage guide says Business bookings include both an underseat and overhead bag under the new system. The useful economy distinction is therefore not “cabin bag or no cabin bag”. It is included underseat space versus separately included or purchased overhead space.

Jetstar describes the future policy as size-first and says it removes the current seven-kilogram combined limit. That line needs its second half.

No single bag may weigh more than 10 kilograms. Customers must also be able to lift and carry their own bags. The new system removes the current combined seven-kilogram baseline for JQ departures from the start date, but it does not abolish weight controls.

Until then, a Jetstar Starter fare generally allows two cabin items with a combined weight of seven kilograms: one main item for the overhead locker, up to 56 by 36 by 23 centimetres, and one small underseat item. Selected bookings can add another seven kilograms or include a 14-kilogram allowance, with a 10-kilogram maximum for the heavier item.

This makes the date boundary more than a footnote. A bag that is part of the basic allowance on an outbound flight before 2 February could sit behind Priority on a return JQ flight on or after that date. Jetstar explicitly tells customers with split-date itineraries to check each flight’s allowance.

Jetstar has set a protection for some early bookings. JQ flights booked before 5 August 2026 for departure from 2 February 2027 will receive the new Priority Carry-on option regardless of fare or bundle, excluding group bookings. The airline says affected customers do not need to take action and will receive an updated itinerary and email.

If one of those customers had already paid for Jetstar’s extra seven-kilogram carry-on option, the airline says it will refund that baggage purchase. This is a narrow transition arrangement, not a promise for every booking made before travel. Both the booking date and departure date have to match the published conditions.

A booking made later should be read on its own terms. The future underseat allowance is included, but overhead access may be in a selected bundle, added through Priority Carry-on, or included with Business Class. The itinerary and Manage booking record are more reliable than a screenshot of the general policy.

Jetstar Airways JQ and Jetstar Japan GK will not switch together. Jetstar says a connection involving both can carry different allowances from 2 February 2027: JQ moves to the one-or-two-item size system, while GK stays with the seven or 14-kilogram two-item system.

The airline’s own guidance is to check item, size and weight limits for every flight and pack to the lowest allowance when the journey crosses policies. Qantas gives the same broad instruction for mixed domestic, international, Jetstar or partner itineraries.

That variation is not unusual. IATA says carry-on allowances can differ by airline, cabin class and aircraft type, while each airline’s conditions of carriage apply. Its commonly cited 56 by 45 by 25 centimetre figure is a general reference, not a universal cabin-bag guarantee. Jetstar’s published JQ overhead dimensions are narrower in one direction.

The practical shift is therefore clear but bounded. From 2 February 2027, a JQ economy booking always has a place for one compliant underseat bag. The overhead wheelie belongs to a separate option or eligible bundle. Before assuming either rule, check the departure date, operating airline code and allowance shown on the actual booking.
